Nashville International Airport
Runway 2L/20R Reconstruction

Client: Metropolitan Nashville Airport Authority
Location: Nashville, Tennessee
Project Cost: $24 million

Project
The Metropolitan Nashville Airport Authority selected Garver to provide design, bidding, and construction administration services to reconstruct Runway 2L/20R. Nashville International Airport's Runway 2L/20R was experiencing accelerated deterioration. An alkali-silica reaction (ASR) aggregate problem had taken its toll on the concrete runway, literally destroying the runway from the inside. Garver focused on the portion of runway south of the Runway 13/31 intersection as well as all of the connector taxiways from the parallel taxiways on either side of the runway.

The complete reconstruction of Runway 2L/20R will consist of an area approximately 6,852 feet long and 150 feet wide (nearly 24 acres) of 17-inch concrete pavement. The old runway was demolished with a guillotine breaker, hauled to an on-site crushing and screening plant, pugmilled, and returned to the project for use as a crushed aggregate material. All of the existing concrete was recycled, including the steel dowel bars.

Garver designed the 35-foot-wide asphalt shoulders, full-length in-pavement centerline lights, and touchdown zone lights for the 2L approach. Airfield work also includes drainage work, stormwater management, airfield lighting, airfield signs, erosion and sediment control, and pavement markings.
